Suffern's Comedy Competition Puts the Vote in the Audience's Hands
Every month at the Rhino Room, a lineup of stand-up comics goes head to head — and the crowd decides who walks away with a paid gig.
The Rhino Monthly Comedy Competition returns to Suffern on Friday, June 12th at 8pm, and the format is exactly what makes it worth showing up for: three rounds of short stand-up sets, a room full of paying customers, and the audience holding all the power.
The prize isn't a trophy or a gift card — the winner earns a paid performance spot on a future Saturday night Rhino Room show. That's real stakes for the comics, and it makes the crowd's role feel genuinely meaningful. You're not just watching; you're deciding who gets a shot.
The structure keeps things moving. Short sets mean no one comic overstays their welcome, and the competitive angle gives the whole evening a pulse that a regular showcase sometimes lacks. If you've been to a comedy night where the energy sagged halfway through, this is a different animal. Each performer is working for something, and you can feel it.
The Hardware Bar menu is available throughout the show, and there's a two-item minimum per person — drinks, food, whatever suits you. The ticket is $12, which sits comfortably in the range of a decent weeknight out in Rockland. Suffern's downtown has enough parking that it's not a hassle if you're coming in from Mahwah, Hillburn, or anywhere along Route 17.
If you've got a friend who does open mics or has been talking about trying stand-up, this is a good nudge in their direction: competitors get in free but are also expected to meet the two-item minimum, which the Rhino Room frames graciously as
